Cast Away

4

Tom Hanks is alone on a desert island with only a ball for company

Robert Zemickis is a technical innovator with at  least one future-proofed classic under his belt; so why is he usually undervalued?

Cast Away may not have the once-in-alifetime perfection of that time-travel flick he did, but it’s the work of a serious filmmaker committed to following ideas to their logical ends.

Tom Hanks impresses as the modern-day Crusoe and, while the volleyball business is easy to parody, Cast Away’s bravely foregoes cheesy adventure and demonstrates that while being marooned may suck, it really sucks to come home afterward.
