Cell 211

A prison guard is caught in the middle of a riot

The first day in a new job can be hard for anyone. But prison guard Alberto Ammann has it tougher than most in this Spanish thriller, having been caught behind bars in the middle of a riot that forces him to pretend to be one of the inmates.

Forging an uneasy alliance with psychopathic lifer Luis Tosar, he starts secretly communicating with the authorities outside without realising they couldn’t care less if he gets out alive.

Tense and ingenious, Daniel Monzón’s film is a genuine edge-of-the-seater that’s only let down by a confusing and downbeat climax.
