Neil Marshall's gory riff on the legend of the Ninth Legion kicks in with a gutsy raid on Roman invaders by the Pict tribesmen of Scotland, circa 117 AD.
Reduced from a legion to a handful led by Michael Fassbender, the surviving Romans make a bid for the border.
They just have to outrun the Picts’ most fearsomely sexy warrior, Olga Kurylenko… It’s a relentless chase flick where everyone in this gaggle of glittering up-and-comers has a nibble on the scenery.
The savage bloodletting is the closest it gets to historical fact, but it’s still heart-pumping stuff that, peculiarly, has you rooting for the away team. Excellent Marshall-led supps.
