Shocking but essential film about the Nanking Massacre

This year, the German film City Of War: The Story Of John Rabe recounted the 1937 Nanking Massacre from the perspective of the westerners who tried to save the Chinese population from Japanese occupation.

In Lu Chuan’s shocking take, the focus is on victims and aggressors. Boy, does this make you feel it.

Shot in monochrome, it’s a near-unwatchable succession of executions and rapes anchored only by Japanese Sergeant Kadokawa (Hideo Nakaizumi), an unwilling participant in the atrocities.
