Cloud Atlas

Time-spanning epic is worth another look on DVD...

As a film of reaching ambition that tries to say something earnest about humanity, it’s easy to scoff at Cloud Atlas – tempting even, especially when Tom Hanks speaks Oirish or Jim Sturgess goes yellowface. Yes, these things really happen, but in service to a worthy idea.

Cloud Atlas has its core cast play multiple roles not only across sprawling, interlinked pockets of time, but also across race and even gender in a fairly successful (if bloated) attempt at movie-fying the source novel’s notions of universality and repeating patterns of behaviour.

The result is epic, sentimental and worth an open-minded look.
