Computer Chess

Analogue love and checkmates

From mumblecore maestro Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha) comes a witty ensemble comedy masquerading – very convincingly – as an early ’80s documentary.

At a weekend conference in a bland US hotel, a crowd of software programmers pit their clunky primitive computers against each other in virtual chess games. The hotel’s also hosting a group of daffy new agers.

Shooting in B&W (barring one brief colour episode) on a vintage video camera, Bujalski has endless fun with his cast of geeks spouting richly pretentious – and often pot-addled – dialogue while unleashing their competitive instincts.

Abundant extras, too.
