Johnny Depp gets his musical hat on...

Cry-baby review

Johnny Depp served notice of more leftfield ambitions as the juvenile delinquent in John Waters’ gleefully camp pastiche of ’50s teen musicals.

Ironically, back then critics feared that Waters had gone soft by courting the mainstream.

Today, it’s clear from an ace retrospective doc that he was having a ball at Hollywood’s expense.

Whether blowing his budget on musical numbers or assembling one of the weirdest casts ever seen in a studio pic (Iggy Pop, Traci Lords, Patty Hearst) this is a triumphant retooling of Waters’ trash aesthetic for the multiplex.
