Dom Hemingway

Jude Law's earnest attitude

Jude Law’s attempt at a shouty, sweary, Filth-y reinvention is a bold but doomed effort. He certainly gives it oomph as a safecracker released from prison but struggles to free his inner geezer; the more Law roars “I am Dom Hemingway!”, the less convincing he sounds.

Yet the flaws are more widespread in this strained throwback to the artier wing of BritCrime. While writer/director Richard Shepard (The Matador) has form with offbeat character studies, his overwritten dialogue mistakes style for substance and a tonal shift from scabrous to sentimental doesn’t come off.

This needed more than simply bringing Sexy Beast back.
