The ghosts of John Hughes and Candy loom large over Todd Phillips’ comedy, a serviceable re-do of Planes, Trains And Automobiles laced with Hangover raunch.
Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis are this year’s reluctant travelling buddies, the former’s dash to be at his wife’s side in the delivery room thwarted at every turn by the gormless latter’s well-intentioned bumbling.
At best as amusing as PTAA, if markedly more mean-spirited, it’s not a film that lingers.
Although Downey deserves kudos for fearlessness, the scene where he thumps an annoying child in the stomach proves he’ll do anything for a laugh.
