Ever After

Drew Barrymore-starring Cinderella update still charms

Taking the enchantment out of the Cinders story does not make this spirited fable any less enchanting.

Leonardo da Vinci stands in perfectly well for the Fairy Godmother, while making its heroine far less reliant on life-altering spell-casting excises much of the passivity that plants the Disney cartoon version so firmly in its age.

Drew Barrymore, still with puppy fat, is as endearing as Anjelica Huston is malevolent, while Dougray Scott makes a disarming Prince Charming.

If it had a little less sappy romance and a touch more self-referential wit, Andy Tennant’s film might have even been in the same league as The Princess Bride.
