Everything Must Go

An engagingly unforced tale of a man hitting bottom

Sacked from his job and kicked out by his wife due to his incipient alcoholism, Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) takes up residence on his front lawn surrounded by his possessions and proceeds to do… absolutely nothing. Adapted from a Raymond Carver story, it’s an engagingly unforced tale of a man hitting bottom. Appearing in every scene, Ferrell ensures Halsey’s plight is moving, amusing and – most importantly – convincing. It’s not quite the Oscar-snaffling about-turn it sounds, but stars of his stature make so few films this grounded and grown-up, it’s almost profound by default.
