Top performances in a 9/11-themed tearjerker

This immaculately glossy adap of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel reaches for post-9/11 catharsis but feels too self-conscious to touch those emotions.

It lucks out with a tremendous cast led by 13-year-old Thomas Horn, extraordinary as a too-precocious boy interviewing half of New York (just the nice half, like Viola Davis) about a key left by his father (Tom Hanks) who died in the Twin Towers.

Painful, poignant performances from Sandra Bullock as his mother and Max von Sydow as his mute neighbour are better than the movie.
