Fever Pitch

4

A snapshot of a generation struggling to put away childish things

Made back when Colin Firth was better known as Mr Darcy than George VI, this affable adap of Nick Hornby’s eulogy to fandom finds the British star as an Arsenal fan so devoted to the Gunners he has little room for romance with fellow teacher Ruth Gemmell.

What follows is no less rambling than its autobiographical source, a hurdle its baseball-oriented US cousin (2005’s The Perfect Catch) had trouble overcoming. But thanks to Firth’s winning performance, this Fever proves pitch-perfect in its snapshot of a generation struggling to put away childish things.
