Disney’s superior sci-fi is a very grown-up kids’ film.
The first half plays out like a Twilight Zone episode, with 12-year-old David (Joey Cramer) nipping out in 1978 and returning to find he’s in 1986.
On the verge of a breakdown, he’s subjected to NASA experiments – before getting re-abducted into a spaceship by Pee-Wee Herman’s alien voice and going for a planet-wide spin.
The early CG FX have aged remarkably well, while the slow build-up makes the Spielbergian space adventure all the more fantastic.
