‘It’s a little bit funny…’ trills Elton John aptly as garden gnomes from rival gardens fall in love in this Shakespeare reboot.
Gnomeo & Juliet is just that – a little bit funny, sort of amusing, cutely OK. But with a Brit cast this starry (Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Patrick Stewart…) and a brightly conceived world, it could’ve been sharper.
Emily Blunt and James McAvoy do their perky best as the titular star-crossed pottery, the action trips along briskly and Elton cranks out his back catalogue to kiddie-entrancing effect, but adults may yearn for Toy Story smarts.
