With an oddball mix of brutal violence (teeth eject, blood splatters), sadcore romance (“My stomach light needs your stomach light”), crude funnies (“My fuckin’ eyeballs just ejaculated!”) and ice-slicing action (the hockey is fast and thrilling),
Goon isn’t quite the sports-com you’re expecting. Bulkedup Seann William Scott is weirdly adorable as the big-hearted doofus with a right hand like a wrecking ball who becomes his local hockey team’s enforcer on the ice.
It’s a curious companion to Southland Tales – the only other film to harness Scott’s touching melancholy.
