Great Expectations

Mike Newell's take on the Charles Dickens classic novel

There’s nothing really wrong with Mike Newell’s take on the Charles Dickens chestnut, which is probably what’s wrong with it.

Handsomely shot and cast (War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine as a boyband-haired Pip, chasing upward mobility and Holliday Grainger’s aloof Estella), it moves swiftly enough to quash the yawns of the English Lit pupils it’s best aimed at.

It has polish in spades but passion it lacks, looking especially MOR arriving on the ragged coat-tails of Andrea Arnold’s earthy, gobby Wuthering Heights.

Only the flash-fried fate of one of the principals brings a rude jolt to this too-polite retelling of an over-familiar tale.
