Paul Walker’s recent death lends poignancy to this gloomy drama, not least because it has the 40-year-old playing a man grieving the unexpected loss of his wife (Genesis Rodriguez).
Set during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, it sees Walker’s shell-shocked Nolan stranded in a deserted New Orleans hospital, where his newborn daughter is on a life support machine with a failing battery.
Debut director Eric Heisserer imbues this setting with an apocalyptic mood, and while the plot’s predictable, Walker makes the most of his one-man show – increasingly desperate, he’s as good here as he’s ever been.
