There was a time (circa Clueless) when Paul Rudd looked like a romcom leading man ready to bloom.
Then Judd Apatow sidetracked him into a series of hen-pecked married roles and his sexy stock took a nosedive.
James L Brooks’ latest dramedy should have been the perfect reintroduction; he stars opposite genre stalwart Reese Witherspoon as a businessman pushed to crisis point by the dodgy dealings of his father (an underused Jack Nicholson).
Sadly Brooks’ self-help script is lacking in gags and too weighed down with therapyspeak to sparkle.
