How I Live Now

Another world war adds to teenage angst

Stroppy American teen Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) goes to live with her free-spirited cousins in the English countryside, where nature begins to heal her troubled soul.

Then WW3 breaks out and everything goes to shit.

Kevin Macdonald’s adap of the YA bestseller is saccharine in the first half, brave and unflinching in the second – albeit a bit on the harsh side for the Twilight audience, with its shagging cousins and open graves.

Terrific performances and some harrowing set-pieces establish this as classier than the competition, though it’s hard to see who it’s aimed at.
