Howl’s Moving Castle

3

An irresistible Studio Ghibli animation

A key wonder of Studio Ghibli ’toons is their ability to stir emotion with ridiculous-sounding ensembles. In this case: a fire demon, a boy with a beard, a girl cursed to be an old woman and a stick with a turnip for a head.

And then there’s Howl, haunted wizard owner of the titular clanking castle, a man weakened by an apocalyptic war of medieval futurism (a Ghibli speciality, and a beautiful backdrop).

It all makes irresistible, soaring sense thanks to director Hayao Miyazaki stuffing it with detail and heart.
