The latest in The BFI’S series of Ozu early/late doubles makes a shrewd pairing, since Good Morning is a remake of the silent I Was Born, But…
In the former, two young brothers, incensed that their parents won’t buy a TV, take a vow of silence, which causes neighbourhood gossip.
Farting contests figure prominently – so much for Ozu the austere classicist.
IWB,B… also features two sons refusing to speak, here because of their dad’s obsequiousness towards his boss.
In both the humour is sly, warm and playful.
