WW2 epic: Gin-pickled captain leading an ambulance to safety over the Libyan desert

J Lee Thompson’s efficient WW2 epic is more than just a well-oiled war pic. Mines and quicksand serve suspense but it’s the intimate study of close-knit characters under duress that sucks you in. John Mills’ gin-pickled captain leading an ambulance to safety over the Libyan desert trembles with stress and dipsomania; Sylvia Syms’ stoic nurse gets more respect than many war-movie women; and Anthony Quayle’s enemy spy is a decent cove. That and a climax that makes cold beer look so tempting, it became a Carlsberg ad.
