After the theatrical release of this haunted-house/astral-projection cash-cow sequel, James Wan announced he was “finished with the horror genre”. A case of quitting while he was ahead – or not sticking around for people to realise he’s all out of ideas?
This derivative shocker-by-numbers sees Patrick Wilson’s possessed dad stuck further in The Further, where he battles a crossdressing serial killer, a time-travel subplot and clumsy homages to Carnival Of Souls and The Shining.
It’s funnier than the first but nowhere near as original, coherent or menacing, with hand-held segments that manage to look ugly and cheap. Incompetent.
