Interior. Leather Bar

William Friedkin via James Franco

In 1980, William Friedkin released Cruising, starring Al Pacino as a cop who goes undercover on the underground gay scene.

Forty minutes featuring graphic gay sex was cut pre-release, but now James Franco and filmmaker Travis Matthews have re-imagined these missing moments, with straight actor Val Lauren in the Pacino role.

The result is a pretentious hour-long docudrama that captures the pulsating vibe of Friedkin’s film, but overshadows it with a lot of pontificating and theorising – mainly from Franco – about the beauty of gay sex.

A bizarre, often mystifying experiment.
