Island Of Lost Souls

A crazed scientist turns animals into semi-human hybrids

Adapted from a novel by HG Wells (who loathed it), the long-unavailable Island enshrines one of Charles Laughton’s richest turns as crazed scientist Dr Moreau, holed up on a tropical island and turning animals into semi-human hybrids.

Imperialist arrogance personified, Laughton struts around cracking a whip and spouting pseudo-Darwinist rubbish, backed by Bela Lugosi as hybrid-in-chief.

The horror is implied rather than shown, but all the more potent for it.
