Preceding Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights in cinemas, the milder of 2011’s Bronte sisters revisits boasts fine leads but lacks intensity. Adapting Charlotte’s romance, Sin Nombre’s Cary Fukunaga casts Mia Wasikowska as the titular governess: graduating from Alice In Wonderland, she nails Jane’s direct gaze.
Michael Fassbender, meanwhile, looks like he’d shag a tree as a sexy-pants Rochester. Moira Buffini’s script scrambles chronology for snappy plotting, but the woman in the attic is too swiftly glossed over. Blink/miss featurettes, but Fukunaga’s commentary is thorough.
