The Mo brothers bring the pain

Executive produced by Gareth Evans, the Mo Brothers’ memorably nasty thriller confirms Indonesia’s claim to be the new capital of Asian extreme. Although it reunites The Raid 2 alumni Kazuki Kitamura and Oka Antara, it’s relatively light on action, offering instead a two-for-one deal on serial killer and vigilante genres, as a psycho’s viral kill-vids inspire a crusading Jakarta journo to take a more direct approach to combating corruption.

As an allegory of internet-age moral squalor this is searingly nihilistic but, despite stylish direction and capable cross-cutting, the implausible plot lacks the intelligence to achieve its aspirations as a dark-hearted Heat.
