Fifteen years after That Thing You Do!, Tom Hanks’ second directorial outing is a by-numbers recession-set romance that makes You’ve Got Mail look like Paradise Lost. Even by Hanks’ standards, Larry Crowne is a mercilessly upbeat creation, his sprits undimmed by divorce, redundancy and living next door to Cedric the Entertainer. In a plot that gets sillier by the reel, Larry enrols in college, hangs with the cool kids and finally falls for Julia Roberts’ moody, margarita-supping tutor. Just as well she teaches public speaking rather than chemistry, because she and Hanks don’t have any. Very much a case of C+ – must try harder.
