Poor Lilo & Stitch. Had this 2002 offering from Disney come out a decade earlier, it may have been regarded as an innovative classic.
Sadly for the Mouse House, Pixar was already raising the bar far beyond mere kids’ trifles, so this oddity hasn’t quite received the retrospective love afforded to some of its contemporaries.
Sure, it skews young, but there’s real beauty to the design (and how retro does cel animation feel, a mere 12 years on?) and in Stitch – an intergalactic weapon in anarchic exile on Earth – they had a character with an unpredictability that can often be lacking in their white-bread competitors’ world.
