Lion Of The Desert

1

A worthy widescreen mess

A curio from Anthony Quinn’s late career, this all-star WWII epic has become movie trivia instead of turning up on TV every Sunday.

Financed by Colonel Gaddafi, it aimed to shine a Hollywood light on selective moments from Libyan history. Obviously ordered to make “something like Lawrence Of Arabia”, Moustapha Akkad directed a heavyweight cast (Rod Steiger, Oliver Reed, John Gielgud) and made a worthy widescreen mess.

Curiosity, and Quinn’s bravura turn as a Bedouin revolutionary, are the only reasons to surrender three hours.
