Colin Farrell and Knightley are no William Holden and Gloria Swanson in an undercooked update of Sunset Boulevard that sees his ex-con become her camera-shy starlet’s bodyguard-cum-lover while trying to steer clear of his old crime pals.
Lively supporting turns from David Thewlis and Ben Chaplin raise expectations this might be more than another Guy Ritchie knock-off.
But once Ray Winstone swaggers on as a gangland kingpin, the already strained plotting in The Departed scripter William Monahan’s directorial debut becomes as shaky as Colin’s Cockney accent.
