Cate Shortland's follow-up to Somersault

Cate Shortland’s follow-up to 2005’s Somersault is another coming-of-age tale about a girl’s sexual awakening.

Here, though, the girl (Saskia Rosendahl) has other matters to contend with: the collapse of the Reich, being abandoned by her Nazi parents and a traumatic trek across occupied Germany.

Joining her and her four siblings en route is Thomas (Kai Malina), a Jewish refugee who makes Lore confront both her complicity in the Hitler machine and her confusing adolescent urges.

Elegantly shot if studiously paced, it’s a film that asks you to empathise, if not with evil itself, then with one of its unwitting cheerleaders.
