How to squeeze the story of ’70s porn star-turned-feminist author Linda Lovelace into 89 minutes – especially if you’re going to show two conflicting versions of events? Lovelace never solves this riddle, its drama as slender as its star.
Shame, because Amanda Seyfried impresses as the “sexy Raggedy Ann” whose oral capabilities propelled Deep Throat to $600m; Peter Saarsgard nails the nice and the nasty as Chuck Traynor, the husband who masterminded Linda’s rise/subjected her to rape and beatings; and the period design is faultless.
But without flesh on its bones it’s the filmic equivalent of a blow-up doll.
