Machine Gun Preacher

Gerard Butler fights for the kids.

Gerard Butler has God and heavy artillery on his side in this fact-based account of a reformed ex-con who decides his true calling is to build an orphanage in the war-torn Sudan.

But it’s easier said than done, the local militia forcing this ex-biker to use their tactics against them to stop his charges becoming brutalised child soldiers.

Nuance is not at the top of the agenda in a movie that flecks its righteous moral indignation with slickly staged bloodshed. But after too many sappy romcoms, it’s nice to see Gerard Butler land a role he can get his teeth into.
