Miller's Crossing

The Coen Brothers finesse their noir style

Miller's Crossing review

“A handsome movie about men in hats,” says DoP Barry Sonnenfeld of the Coen bros’ third feature, an elegant, brutal noir pastiche thoroughly worthy of its genre.

Yet it wears its fedoras and trenchcoats lightly, as Gabriel Byrne’s Bogart-esque Mob lieutenant finesses the angles to prevent war between his boss (Albert Finney) and upstart rival (John Polito).

A deceptively humane hard-boiled epic about the limits of friendship, the application of character, and holding onto your (ethical) hat when all about you are losing theirs. Extras are DVD hold-overs.
