If Walt Disney had feasted on ’shrooms before making his Snow White, it might’ve resembled Tarsem’s candy-coloured take on the Brothers Grimm fairytale.
A triumph of design, it’s a fitting epitaph to his regular costumer Eiko Ishioka, who died before the film was completed.
Her outfits (not least heroine Lily Collins’ swan-head hat) are brilliantly bonkers. But it’s not all happy ever after: both the dwarves and Julia Roberts’ Evil Queen underwhelm, while the action is left in the dust by rival Snow White & The Huntsman.
Hit-and-miss laughs too, though Roberts’ makeover scene is an icky (Bees! Maggots! Poo!) winner.
