Mother and Child

A drama about 3 women; a mum, her child and a woman looking to adopt one of her own.

Rodrigo GarcÍa’s first film since 2005’s Nine Lives comprises a trio of story strands centring on a woman (Annette Bening) caring for her ailing mother, the daughter Bening gave up for adoption (Naomi Watts) and a young wife considering an adoption of her own (Kerry Washington).

As the threads interweave things take a turn for the contrived; the result is a well played but uneven and oddly moralising set of character studies. It’s initially a great showcase for Watts, but her egocentric Elizabeth makes a hokey midpoint 180 that sums up the film’s well-intentioned flaws.
