Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

Branagh takes on the Bard

Before he went all blockbuster-y with Thor and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Kenneth Branagh was the go-to-guy for vibrant Shakespeare adaps.

Now sitting comfortably alongside Joss Whedon’s quickie from last year, Branagh’s Much Ado is one of his best takes on the Bard. Staying faithful to Bill’s Mediterranean setting, Branagh leads his starry cast through a world of merry matchmaking.

Kate Beckinsale makes her sweet big-screen bow and Denzel Washington is cool and commanding, but Emma Thompson steals it with her rapier-witted Beatrice. Yes, even from Keanu doing iambic pentameter.
