Sam Taylor Wood’s directorial bow may not mine John Lennon’s creative genius, but it does explore the female forces at work during the cockiest Beatles’ formative years, torn as he is between strict aunt (Kristin Scott Thomas) and mercurial mum (Anne-Marie Duff).
Aaron Johnson nails the gobby charisma, and the ladies provide emotional depth in meticulous period settings.
Not as magical a mystery tour as you’d hope, though.
