O Brother, Where Art Thou?

George Clooney hits a high note for the Coen brothers

The Coens’ picaresque tale of cons-on-the-run George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson may be their maddest movie: an adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, transposed to Depression-era America, pitched as rambunctious slapstick.

As slick as Ulysses Everett McGill’s pomade, it’s an exuberant crowd-pleaser, yet its apparent ease hides a smart satire of a troubled nation retreating into crime and racism.

Blu-ray offers the chance to marvel anew at cinematographer Roger Deakins’ use of digital technology to repaint imagery in sepia tones.
