Forget the octopus...

We’ve reached a pretty pickle, remake-wise.

This Oldboy redo does a lot right: Spike Lee (despite production problems) delivers skilful direction, Josh Brolin glowers successfully in a surprisingly harsher re-imagining of the 2004 original’s protagonist and the notorious twist is only slightly neutered.

Everyone involved is a skilled professional delivering solid work but, next to the mad majesty of Park Chan-wook’s original, mere competence cannot help but pale by comparison.

It isn’t terrible but it’s already half-forgotten and, given the calibre of talent involved, their time really would have better spent doing something else.
