A drawn-out romance

David Nicholls adapts his own bestseller into a mawkish odyssey that spans 20 years of an on-off relationship. Meeting in the late ’80s, Emma and Dexter have a fling that never gets them past the BFF barrier.

We catch up with them on the same day every year as she becomes a teacher and he turns into an annoying TV shock jock. Jim sturgess and an oddly ageless Anne Hathaway make good work of the laboured script, but it ends how you’d expect – and then carries on for another half an hour.
