Set in 1988, this prequel records pre-teen siblings Katie (played by Katie Featherston in the first movie) and Kristi (Sprague Grayden in the second) as imaginary ‘friend’ Toby comes a-calling.
Expect more of the same from the franchise that looks set to run and run (PA4 is already greenlit) – mock-doc format, elliptical narrative, static nighttime surveillance shots featuring, well, paranormal activity.
Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman capture three good stings, and fixing a camera to a rotating fan is canny. But the law of diminishing returns haunts every frame and the mythology building, half-baked and second-hand, is unwise.
