Steve Martin shines in Howard's family classic

A post-Bill & Ted Keanu Reeves still playing a wacked-out teen.

Joaquin Phoenix back when he was Leaf.

Steve Martin dreaming about his sappy son becoming a clock-tower sniper...

There’s lots to love in Ron Howard’s schmaltzy, well-seasoned sitcom-athon, and many of the laughs still leave a lump in the throat.

Ambitiously probing every anxiety-ridden corner of the suburban mum-and-dad experience, some of its interconnecting story strands work better than others.

But it’s Martin’s mix of tearyeyed pathos and balloon-clown mania that looks best for its age.
