Pete's Dragon

Uninspiring combo of live action and animation

For some reason this month’s flurry of Disney Blu-ray releases is swelled by 1977’s Pete’s Dragon , an uninspiring combo of live action and animation whose primitive illusions seem all the more crude in the wake of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

Still, it does have Helen Reddy warbling ‘Candle On The Water’, a beautiful ballad that mystifyingly missed out on that year’s Best Song Oscar. It was in good company, though. One of the other luckless nominees was ‘Nobody Does It Better’ from The Spy Who Loved Me.
