Disney's tale of a marionette who dreams of being a real boy

The moralistic tone - let your conscience be your guide, kids! - might rankle with today’s nippers, some of whom might like to see Jiminy Cricket meet the mallet-related fate Carlo Collodi imagined for him.

In other respects Disney’s second full-length feature is masterful: fab to look at, emotionally rewarding and blessed with a fine support cast (Figaro the cat, Monstro the whale, the terrifying Stromboli).

Little wooden top himself (Dickie Jones) is as irritating as a splinter. But you’ll still be humming along with ‘I’ve Got No Strings’.
