A marriage collapses in brutal style

Andrzej Zulawski's psychosexual Gothic melodrama has to be seen to be believed.

Alternating between bravura and bollocks, it’s one of the most brutal depictions of a collapsing marriage ever, which means its rep as “the one where Isabelle Adjani shags an octopus” won’t cut it.

The second half’s veer into full-on horror does turn some off, but the quasi-hysterical tone established from the first shot means it doesn’t feel out of place.

You’re left admiring Zulawski’s balls in making his metaphors flesh, rather than churning out yet another flick about an angry couple shouting at each other.
