David Gordon Green's escape from the city

Now best known for Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green returns to the indie aura of his earlier output (such as 2003’s All The Real Girls) with this story of stern, upright Alvin (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s horny brother, Lance (Emile Hirsch) – two bickering road workers who strike up an unlikely friendship in a lonely landscape ravaged by wildfire.

As befitting mumblecore, not much actually happens... but that, of course, is the point.

Out of the strikingly lensed sparseness comes a soothing ode to male friendship that’s handled with a light and funny (if at times meandering) touch. A welcome return to subtlety for Green.
