Quest For Fire

Jean-Jacques Annaud traces the dawn of man

Like his better-know work, The Name Of The Rose, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s drama of evolutionary jumps is about the power of communication, this time among primal tribes during the dawn of man.

Everett McGill leads a band of grunting cavemen (including Ron Perlman in a role he barely needs make-up to play) crossing the wilderness to find fire, building through their encounters and largely non-verbal interplay a compelling picture of the first few subtle but momentous acts of humanity’s self-awareness.

Perlman and co-star Rae Dawn Chong reminisce enjoyably on the better of the disc’s two commentaries.
